How to Learn English Comprehension
English comprehension refers to the understanding and analysis of the English language. The principles of English comprehension are important in reading, writing and literary analysis. It involves understanding the words and sentence construction, as well as making interpretations and connections between these words, sentences, and paragraphs. In order to learn English comprehension, listen to verbal communication, read books, analyze poetry, study grammar, and create vocabulary lists.
Instructions
- 1Listen to verbal communication. In order to learn English comprehension, do listening exercises. You can either do this with CDs, or with other people. Listen to the conversation on the CD, or listen to two of your friends have a conversation. Then, describe the context of the conversation. After that, answer questions that relate to the conversation on the CD, or have your friends ask you questions about their conversation.
- 2Read books. When learning English comprehension, you must understand the importance of reading comprehension. Reading comprehension involves reading a passage, and then answering questions about it. Some of the questions should be basic, while others can be more abstract. Based on your answers to the questions, you can evaluate your understanding of the literature. Some books will have questions in them, but if they do not, have a friend make up the questions.
- 3Analyze poetry. You can learn English comprehension by reading and analyzing poems. In order to do this, read a poem, and take notes about the rhyme schemes and stanzas. Then, answer questions that relate to the poem. If you answer any question incorrectly, refer back to the poem in order to correct your mistakes.

Study grammar. Reading about English grammar rules and doing grammar exercises will help you to learn English comprehension. Focus on one grammatical rule each day, and do the exercises that correspond to that rule. For example, you may decide to focus on nouns, and then do an exercise on singular and plural subjects. Most grammar books have exercises in them. - 5Create vocabulary lists. Whenever you do listening comprehension exercises, reading comprehension exercises or poetry analysis, write down the words that you do not know. Then, use the dictionary in order to define the words. Take a few words from this list each day and study them.
