It takes a lot of hard work and patience to speak English fluently. If you don't live in an English-speaking country, you need to make an extra effort by dedicating time to speak English daily. A language is a living thing; if you don't use it, you will lose it. Whatever you do, make sure you enjoy the process of learning.
Instructions
- 1Set your goals. Plan to take an English language proficiency test in a six-month time frame, or enter an English-speech contest, for example. When you have a goal, you know what area or vocabulary you need to focus on.
- 2Immerse yourself in English. You cannot improve only your speaking ability. Speaking, listening, reading and writing skills go hand in hand. Use an English-English dictionary. Try learning English everyday, by reading newspapers or magazines, and watching English news on line or listening to an English radio station on line. Watch films with English subtitles, memorize useful phrases and repeat them.
- 3Find English speaking opportunities. Move to an English-speaking country. If that's not possible, travel to an English- speaking country regularly. Find work locally where you can speak English, for instance, at the airport, or do some volunteer work such as helping English-speaking tourists. Attend regular English classes or join the English-speaking forum or group. Think in English at least for 20 minutes everyday. Try to sing English songs or talk to yourself in English, when taking a shower.
- 4Make English-speaking friends. It is easier to find friends through your hobbies or interests. For example, if you like cooking, study all cooking-related words and find a local English-speaking cooking group. It is easier to speak with like-minded people. Exchanging languages is a great way to learn English, too. Find English-speaking friends who are learning your native language so that you don't need to feel that you are only using your friends to learn English.
- 5Join Toastmasters or public speaking groups. Learn how to speak in public and develop public speaking skills. If you have something to say, people tend to listen to you.
